The US Navy Postgraduate Coarse in Fighter Weapons Tactics and Doctrine or Top Gun was formed in 1968 as a result of the kill ratio suffered by the US Navy over Vietnam. In March of 1969, the first course of air to air combat training took place. By 1972, the US Navys kill ratio had successfully risen to 12 to 1. In the early days Douglas A-4 Skyhawks and F-5 Tiger IIs were painted in adversarial paint to mimic the Soviet counterparts. Pilots would train in mock air to air combat against these adversaries.
